Smart Ageing Finland - Digital Transformation of Health & Wellbeing for Older People

In Finland, municipalities organise many services for the elderly to make their lives easier and to enable them live in their own homes for as long as possible. Municipalities organise home care (kotihoito) for the elderly, which entails day-to-day assistance and nursing at home. Home care encompasses home services, home nursing and support services.
Home services are help with day-to-day activities, such as washing and dressing oneself and eating. Home nursing is nursing and rehabilitation that takes place at home. A doctor writes a referral for home nursing. In addition to this, support services are available, which include meal, cleaning, shopping, security and transport services.
The aim of the Smart Life Finland programme (2019 - 2022) is to promote personal, real-time and intelligent health and wellbeing solutions that are accessible and at anytime. Business Finland is ready to fund the program with EUR 80 - 100 million. In addition, the aim is to launch for growth engines in the health and wellbeing industry.
The programme is being launched in the context of the transformation taking place in the health and wellbeing sector. The need for integrated personal and smart health and wellbeing solutions arise from the increasing interest in own's health globally. The number of people in the workforce is decreasing due to the changing population structure which is also creating a greater need for care. It is therefore essential to develop solutions for reducing costs. The programme boosts the development of health and wellbeing services through digitalization, exponential technologies (e.g. XR, AI, 5G), the platform economy and testbed environments. Often the greatest advances are made together. Networking across sectoral and national boundaries as well as cooperation with research organizations can open up entirely new growth prospects for companies.
The programme has two focus areas:
- A living environment that promotes health and wellbeing
Solutions and services related to smart homes and living environment, nutrition, effificient data utilizations, artificial intelligence or virtual reality
- Transforming healthcare
Soloutions and services for the whole care path. For example: virtual hospitals, testbed environments, innovative public procurements as well as remote monitoring, disgnostics and other homecare solutions.
